This home study was recorded at a recent 1-day professional workshop.  Professionals who listen to the tapes or CD’s, read the accompanying materials, and pass the post-test will receive 6 hours CE/CME credit.

The home study fulfills relicensure requirements for California Psychologists, Social Workers and MFT’s. It fulfills requirements of other state licensing boards as well -- please call for additional information.

Format and Content

The home study may be ordered either on audiotape or CD. Each kit contains 6 CD’s or cassettes, all slides and other course materials used at the live workshop, a post-test, and complete instructions. Standard materials provided pertain to California law; however materials and forms for other states are available. Please call IAHB for additional information and to order program materials specific to your state.

Course Description

Covered topics focus on how legal, ethical and regulatory forces play out in selected areas of professional activity. as well as a review of current HIPAA rules and regulations. The home study will provide you with forms and policies for coping with the laws, regulations and ethics codes, including samples of basic forms for record keeping, amendments and releases of information, informed consent and treatment summaries. In addition, the home study will orient you to the regulatory activities of licensing boards

In sum, you’ll find that its easier than you may have thought to work in safety without having to give up the caring and compassion that brought you to the field.

Workshop Objectives

After completing this home study you will be better able to:

  • Track therapeutic process and monitor the therapeutic alliance.
  • List and appreciate a variety of fundamental problems created by the interplay between law, ethics, and regulations in mental health care.
  • Describe the doctrine of informed consent and list its elements.
  • Implement clinical risk management strategies which minimize the dangers relating to informed consent, while complying with regulatory guidelines and maintaining patient safety.
  • Apply state laws to the creation and maintenance of clinical records.
  • Discuss the differences between clinical records and psychotherapy notes.
  • Modify your procedures to comply with both State and HIPAA regulations
  • Respond appropriately to subpoenas and other requests for clinical records.
  • Discuss the differences between confidentiality and privilege.
  • Distinguish between confidentiality and privilege for adults and children.
  • Accurately inform patients about the limits of confidentiality and privilege.
  • Follow prudent policies for high conflict divorce and custody cases.
